Q: Why Procly instead of just AI agents?
A: AI agents are powerful tools, and might be suitable for ad hoc one off tasks, ideally under the supervision of a human. However, some businesses might not consider them suitable for building and managing complex processes that require a high level of control and security. Processes are repeatable steps that are executed in a sequence, sometimes at large scale, so there are some pain points with using only AI agents directly for this:
- Determinism: AI agents are not reliably deterministic, and can sometimes produce different results even for the same input. They can even produce hallucinations, or possibly even produce results that could damage your business legally, reputationally, or financially. Procly provides a way to ensure that your process can be run deterministically, either by executing deterministic code for some stages, or allowing approval gating to require human approval for any potentially risky AI actions. Procly also allows you to track the results of each step, and to roll back to a previous version of the process if needed if you don't like how it's performing. You can also slow roll and experiment with new versions of the process on a small percentage of users before rolling out to all users.
- Cost: AI agents can be expensive to use. Most AI agent APIs charge a relatively high cost per API call, and you can easily end up spending a lot of money if you're not careful. Typically, in order to achieve production-grade accuracy you often need to increase the amount of tokens you use per call, or the number of API calls you make, which can also add up quickly. Procly allows you to leverage deterministic code Stages to reduce the cost of your processes, and also to experiment with AI Stages to track costs, performance, and ROI.
- Security: Using just AI agents to power your workflows or processes has many pitfalls which could expose your business to severe security risks that can cause data breaches, compliance disasters, and massive financial damage. Without proper controls, agents are routinely given broad, over-privileged access to databases, emails, SaaS tools, and APIs “just to get the job done,” turning a single misbehaving or hallucinating agent into an insider threat with keys to everything. Tool calls and code execution can be tricked into exfiltrating files, modifying systems, or chaining attacks. Hallucinations or unpredictable decisions could produce potentially disastrous results. Easy violations of GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2, and other regulations, plus real-world incidents of data leaks and unauthorized access are already being seen in production by some organizations. The more autonomous the agent, the bigger the blast radius.
